I still enjoy vanilla Medieval2 more so than I do post-shogun II total war titles. The newer games just don't do it for me. I'd play a short campaign on vanilla to get used to the mechanics and then try out whatever mods interest you. Either way Medieval 2 is still very much worth the money. 1. Guilds are one of the rather useful additions to Medieval 2: Total War. You can get Guilds that award your troops extra experience, allow you to build “new” units and get bonuses like trade bonuses. Also, this is very important in my style of play, make sure you sack every city, to get a huge cash boost, even if that settlement starts to riot it would have been worth it, because the money you get is usually quite a lot. in your first 20 turns or so what you build in your cities matters a lot, so i take this path farms-> markets -> merchant
Rome: Total War. Released in 2004, Rome: Total War was the real breakout hit for the series – well over a decade later it is still the best. Walk into any university lecture on the Roman Republic, say “Total War Rome: II is better than the original” and a fight may break out. Medieval 2 is wildly regarded as the best Total War game, only topled recently by Warhammer II, and that too needed about 4-5 years of constant support and fine-tuning.
